Badly treated by a succession of people in her life, she is eventually offered marriage by a Duc, but it is only a contract marriage for a year and a day. Joanne goes from living a life that could not be more unbearable than it is, to being the wife of a decent man. The couple raises a family and comes to love each other deeply. This book is not written for children, it does deal with some themes that are difficult for children to comprehend, such as abuse and childbirth, but the language is not graphic.
