Deep woods logging site with a small stream running down the skid road. The photo that this work is based on took Laura's breath away when she first saw it, because it depicted a wet and miserable day in the woods - just like so many of her childhood and teenage years stacking and loading firewood, then splitting and stacking fence posts, and then logging with her father in the forests of Washington State. She failed utterly to capture the essential misery of the original photo, but the detail in this painting is far finer than anything else she has painted. Based on the photo of another artist.

This was painted for the same reason that seafarers paint stormy seas and rainy fishing scenes. The original photo was so wet and dreary looking, that Laura was instantly put back into the woods on a rainy and muddy day. When the rain chills you, and fills your boots, drips from your hardhat down your neck, and the shoulder seams of your raincoat leak through to your shoulders, and you come home wet, cold, dirty, and miserable, to warm up in front of a cozy fire. It is the accomplishment of a job done in spite of the hardship, the fact that you survived and did it anyway. Her father taught that hard work builds character, and this painting was about that. She was disappointed that she could not capture all the wet, but pleased that the woods are still deep and littered with the detritus of the work that occurred there.

The original colors are more varied and intense, with many refractory and fractured colors, with fine details that do not show well in a photo. Blame the camera.
